I would like to thank Trevor Crane, Chris Stallworthy and Don Scott for joining me today for our first Community Speed Watch traffic monitoring session.
We set up at the A 4130 layby next to Fox Hill Meadow. (One of our eight Police approved survey sites). We recorded 364 vehicles between 11.08 am and noon.
Police guidelines are that traffic travelling over the speed limit (40 mph) by 10% plus 2 mph are of interest.
Generally the traffic was very law abiding. (Also the road conditions were a little wet). However we “caught” nine vehicles of which the highest speed was 56 mph. (Speeds do come down when there are four gentlemen at the roadside wearing bright yellow jackets !). Of this nine, I was able to verify the details of seven and entered their information onto the CSW Police website.
No prosecutions will result from our work. I understand that the Police (or their computer) send(s) a letter of disapproval to the keepers of the vehicles concerned.
As indicated on the Whatsapp message, I am appealing for more volunteers so that we can share the workload or arrange for more frequent surveys. At the moment we believe that we can support one survey per month. (Every survey requires three people and currently just four are trained). The training is video based on the CSW website and takes roughly 1 1/2 hours.
I would like to purchase some Community Speed Watch roadsigns (post mounted or white gate mounted) for the road entrances to the parish. So we’ll probably want four at roughly £ 100 each plus the cost of brackets etc. Here us the link….
I’s also like to buy a couple more CSW high vis jackets and a handful of photo passes, should members of the public seek to challenge the credentials of our CSW operators.
Rather than wait for the next Parish Council meeting, are the councillors happy for me to proceed ?
Many thanks,
Kevin Duthie
